Dodie Cantrell is embarking on her second career after more than 35 years in broadcasting.
She was named President and General Manager of Gannett’s NBC and ABC duopoly “First
Coast News” in November, 2008 after serving three years as President/GM of 13MWAZ;
Gannett’s CBS affiliate in Macon, GA. Prior to her appointment as GM, Cantrell served as
13WMAZ’s News Director for 13 years. Her broadcast journalism experience includes numerous
awards for her consumer and investigative reporting.
Cantrell is a graduate of the National Association of Broadcasters’ Management Development
Seminar for Television Executives at Northwestern University, the News Directors’ Seminar at
the University of Missouri, the Gannett Broadcast Management Program (GBMP), and the
Center for Creative Leadership’s Leadership Development Program. She holds both
undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mercer University and Georgia College and State
University, respectively.
Dodie enjoys writing and historical research. One of her passions is working with journalists
from former Communist and third world nations. She’s taught journalism in Macedonia and
Bulgaria and sponsored journalist exchanges with broadcasters in Ukraine, Serbia, Romania,
Peru, Chile, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sri Lanka.
She and her husband Randy Bickley have two adult daughters and three grandchildren.
